Myth and Reality

In Myths to Live By Joseph Campbell mentions a particular species of gray moth.  This moth's sexual preference is for darker colored moth mates, such that the moth will try to have sex with a black cutout paper moth in preference to a real lighter-gray-colored moth.  I think that what he was getting at is, we have religious beliefs about things that are larger than life, such that we feel the next world is more real than the real world.  It's like the ontological proof of God's existence.  We imagine something "perfect," and therefore if it doesn't exist it wouldn't be perfect, so it must exist.  We get more emotionally involved in tales of superheroes than in ordinary heroes.  Sometimes real people get promoted to super status, like JFK, or Kobe.

Trump is a larger than life figure.  By promoting his myth for decades he inflated his image.  We don't expect him to play by the same rules as everyone else, because he's super.  Evangelicals are used to larger than life beliefs from reading the bible.  Thinking about Trump is very emotional, and no doubt helps many people to regulate their moods, much like Jesus.  I think that some Christians cling to the idea of a literal seven-day creation because any inconsistency would bring down their whole emotional life.  Now it is with Trump, that some people see him as a fulfillment of Prophesy, that to disbelieve Trump would also be traumatic.  US  presidents are not supposed to be larger than life.  There's a famous statue of Washington which portrays him as life size, with one of the buttons on his coat unbuttoned, to show he wasn't perfect.  It's like in the bible, when the Hebrews wanted a king.  Finally they got one, but he was corrupt.  One way to get away from supernatural worship is through practices like mindfulness where you focus on the present moment.  When we get to attached to the supernatural we reject many things which are real, resulting in the present worship of Trump.
